Dinwiddie County
Dinwiddie County lies within 150 miles of three of the nation's major market and population centers and has easy access to these centers through the area's excellent highway, rail, and air networks. Nearby markets include Washington D.C., Richmond, and Norfolk and the ports of Hampton Roads. The city of Petersburg adjoins the county on its northeastern limits.
Dinwiddie was officially created by an Act of the General Assembly in 1752, but its history goes back to 1643 when it was a part of Charles City County. Dinwiddie County has figured prominently in the nation's history. In the campaign of 1784 there was fighting in the county between the British and the Southside's militia. Soldiers from the area participated in the War of 1812. In the Civil War there was constant fighting in and around the entire Petersburg area. Fifty miles of fortification and sixty forts and batteries are constant reminders of the nearly 50 battles fought here during the Civil War.
